What is Country of Origin?

Country of origin (CO) refers to the country or countries where a product was manufactured, produced, or grown. It is important for several reasons, including:

  • Trade agreements: Many trade agreements have rules about the country of origin of products. For example, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) requires that at least 62.5% of the value of a product be from NAFTA countries in order for it to be considered a NAFTA product. The more modern USMCA continues to use this rule.
  • Tariffs: Tariff amounts can vary depending on the country of origin of the product. For example, the United States imposes a tariff on imported steel from China that is much higher than the tariff on imported steel from Canada.
  • Customs clearance: Customs officials will require to know the country of origin of the goods in order to apply the appropriate tariffs and other fees.
  • Consumer protection: Some consumers may prefer to buy products that are made in their own country or in countries with high labor standards.

There are several ways to know the country of origin of a product. The most common way is to look for the country of origin identification on the product. This identification is usually found on the product label or packaging. The country of origin identification may also be found in the product's documentation, such as a warranty or user manual.

If the country of origin marking is not provided, you can contact the manufacturer or importer of the product. They should be able to provide you with the country of origin of the product.

At times, you may need to get in touch with the chamber of commerce equivalents overseas to be issued a country of origin certificate before you can successfully import into the United States.
