What is Entry (Customs)?

An entry in customs is a formal document that’s filed with the customs authorities when goods are imported or exported. The entry document provides information about the goods, such as: value, quantity, and country of origin. The entry document also specifies the duties and taxes required to be paid on the goods.

There are two main types of entries in customs: formal entries and informal entries.

  • Formal entries are required for goods that are valued at a certain threshold, or for goods that are subject to specific customs regulations. Formal entries must be filed by a customs broker or other authorized person.
  • Informal entries are not required for goods that are below the threshold value, or for goods that are not subject to specific customs regulations. Informal entries can be filed by the importer or exporter themselves.

In the United States, most imports that are valued at less than $2,500 are processed as informal entries. However, there are exceptions for certain highly regulated products.
