What is Standard International Trade Classification (SITC)?

Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) is a classification system for goods traded overseas. Each good has a code that represents its place in the entire classification system.

The four levels of classification are:

  • Section: The top level of the SITC (10 sections), each of which covers a general category of goods.
  • Division: The second level of the SITC (99 divisions), each of which is a more detailed breakdown.
  • Group: The third level of the SITC (218 groups), each of which is a more detailed breakdown.
  • Class: The fourth and most detailed level of the SITC (977 classes), each of which is a specific type of good.

These codes are used specifically by the United Nations to compare the values of imported and exported codes from country to country. Importers to the U.S. still need to make sure they are classifying goods under the HTS codes that will ultimately determine the tariff rate of the products entering the country.
