What is U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC)?

The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) is the U.S. government’s primary development finance institution. It was established in December 2019, replacing and consolidating the functions of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) and the Development Credit Authority, which was previously housed in the U.S. Agency for International Development.

The DFC’s mission is to help address critical development challenges and advance U.S. foreign policy and national security priorities. It aims to do this by mobilizing private investment in developing countries. The DFC has the ability to

  • Make equity investments
  • Provide loans and loan guarantees
  • Political risk insurance
  • Technical development

The organization supports projects in sectors such as energy, healthcare, infrastructure, technology, and finance. For businesses involved in international trade, understanding the role of DFC can be important. It offers businesses the financial tools they might need to invest and expand into emerging markets.
