What is Harmonized System (HS) Code?

The Harmonized System (HS) Code is an international standardized system for classifying goods traded internationally. It’s used by customs authorities internationally to identify products when assessing duties and taxes.

The HS Code is a 6-digit code that is assigned to each product.

  • The first two digits of the code identify the chapter of the HS, which is a broad category of goods.
  • The next two digits identify the heading of the HS, which is a more specific category of goods.
  • The final two digits identify the subheading of the HS, which is the most specific category of goods.

If you’re trading internationally, it’s important to know the HS Code for your products. This information can help you to save money, comply with the law, and make better business decisions.

It’s also important to understand the difference between the internationally recognized HS codes and the ones assigned specifically by the United States to organize their tariff schedules and duties, known as HTSUS.
