Inward Foreign Manifest (IFM)

An Inward Foreign Manifest (IFM) is a document that lists all the cargo entering the United States. It’s submitted to the customs authorities by the carrier, who’s normally the shipping line or freight forwarder. The IFM contains information such as the cargo's weight, dimensions, value, and country of origin. It’s used by customs to control the flow of goods into the country and to impose duties.

The IFM is a mandatory document in most countries. The specific requirements for the IFM vary from country to country, but they normally include the following information:

• Name and address of the carrier
• Name and address of the consignee
• Bill of lading number
• Description of the cargo
• Weight and dimensions of the cargo
• Value of the cargo
• Country of origin of the cargo

The IFM must be submitted to customs before the cargo is released. In some cases, the IFM may be submitted electronically.
