What is Less than Container Load (LCL)?

Less than container load (LCL) is a shipping term that refers to cargo that does not fill an entire container. LCL shipments are consolidated with other LCLs to fill a container.

Some benefits of using LCL shipping include:

  • It’s a cost-effective way to ship small or less than full container load cargo.
  • It’s a flexible option, as you can ship diverse goods in one container.
  • It’s a convenient option, as you do not need to plan for the entire container to be filled.

Some drawbacks of using LCL shipping include:

  • It can take longer for LCL shipments to arrive than full container load (FCL) shipments.
  • There’s a risk that your goods may be damaged or lost during transit.
  • You may need to pay additional fees for handling and documentation.

LCL shipping is a means for importers to benefit from the rates provided by marine container vessels without having to reserve an entire container for their products entering the United States.
