The Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) was created in 1971 by President Richard Nixon. OPIC's support helped U.S. businesses to invest in emerging markets, which created jobs and opportunities for economic growth. OPIC has since been replaced by the International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) as of January 2020. 

Some benefits of OPIC support include:

• Political risk insurance: To protect U.S. businesses from losses due to political violence, expropriation, and currency fluctuations or dangers. 
• Loan guarantees: For U.S. businesses to easily obtain financing for their investments in emerging markets, reduce the cost of capital, and to make it easier for them to compete with foreign businesses.
• Technical assistance: To help businesses to identify and assess investment opportunities, develop business plans, and to comply with local regulations.
• Training: To help businesses to understand the political and economic environment of the host country, develop relationships with local businesses and government officials, and to manage the risks of investing in these markets.

By promoting U.S. investment in emerging markets, OPIC indirectly facilitated trade, including imports, by helping create more stable economies and stronger trading partners.
