The World Trade Organization (WTO) is an intergovernmental organization that regulates international trade. It was established on January 1, 1995, and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
The WTO's responsibility is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible by providing a forum for governments to negotiate trade agreements, settling trade disputes between its members, and monitoring the implementation of those agreements.
The WTO has 164 members, and its decisions are made by consensus. They are an important agency for promoting free trade and economic growth.
