What is Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA)?

Trade Adjustment Assistance is a federal program that provides benefits and services to workers who have lost their jobs due to foreign trade.

To be TAA-eligible, workers must meet certain criteria, including:

  • Having been employed in a job that was affected by increased imports.
  • Having lost their job or had their hours of work and wages reduced due to increased imports.
  • Being able to show that they are willing to work and to participate in TAA services.

TAA services include job counseling, vocational training, and relocation assistance.

For those involved in importing, understanding TAA can provide some context about the broader impacts of international trade and how the U.S. government seeks to address them. This might also be relevant for companies considering moving production abroad, as this could potentially lead to TAA eligibility for any U.S. workers.
